A Dell executive announced yesterday that the company is considering putting Google’s Chrome operating system on some of its laptops, all of whichcurrently run Microsoft Windows. Such a move by the world’sthird largestcomputer-maker would seem to be a blow for Microsoft, which generates much of its revenue from Windows licensing. Chrome OS, unlike Windows, will be available for free and will rely more heavily on web-based applications — think, Google Documents — than programs stored on a PC’s hard drive. Is this the beginning of a major shift in the software industry?
